School Outreach Program in the First Semester of 2019/2020 AY

  SID School Outreach, at Amazing Grace School. PC: SID Media The main focus of the School Outreach program by Strength in Disability Organisation (SID) was to promote inclusive education by addressing challenging disability issues which will cause basic and secondary school students and teachers to appreciate persons with disabilities and assist them participate fully in all educative activities. In the first semester of the 2019/2020 academic year, our outreach targeted four basic schools: African Faith School, Amazing Grace Preparatory, Kotei R/C JHS and Deduako M/A JHS, all of which are located in thew metropolitan area of Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana. SID Hits The Streets

Courtesy of SID Media As part of its disability advocacy endeavour, Strength in Disability KNUST on Saturday, 21st September 2019 embarked on an outreach to the streets of Kumasi around the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in the Oforikrom Municipality. The outreach saw team members interacting with persons with disabilities (PWDs) who normally beg on the streets for survival. The engagement was to enable the team ascertain the challenges they face and also show them there are people who care about them. A mobility-impaired woman who gave her name as Josephine Arthur, a single parent who has to seek alms from passersby in order to cater for her needs  and that of her child shared her story as the team interacted with her. SID is recognized at the Kumasi leadership and SDG award ceremony

Strength in Disability (SID) KNUST has been formally acknowledged for its substantial contribution to societal development in the area of advocacy and support for persons with disabilities (PWDs) The president for SID KNUST, Mr Frederick Osei, represented the organization at the recent Kumasi Leadership and SDG Award ceremony held at the Law Auditorium of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. The event was organized  by Extra Mile Ghana to appreciate the efforts of individuals and organizations who are making significant contributions in their communities. SID KNUST particularly merited the award due its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 10, which seeks to reduce inequalities. SID's main focus was centered on helping to minimize inequalities between the disabled and the non-disabled. SID KNUST has embarked on many life-changing outreaches and is set to launch a movie which addresses issues of disability and its related matters;

Language, A Barrier?

Have you ever experienced this: you walk into a shop and then try to talk to the people in the shop, and to your utmost surprise, no one understands what you're saying, not even the service provider? Now the million-dollar question is, how would you cope with this frustrating situation, if it were you? Now that's how hearing and speech impaired people feel when they walk into a clinic or other health facility and no one seems to understand what they are trying to say. That's how they feel when they don't even understand what the preacher is talking about in church; that's how they feel when they can't even ask questions in class not because they don't want to but because of their condition. How many institutions in this country have sign language interpreters? One, out of how many? Millions! If that's the case, then how are they coping in such an environment? How are they thriving?
